Placements via satellite for VTU students
Wherever you go, VTracU (We Track You)! Don't go hunting for jobs, jobs will
come to you. Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) announced the
launch of new initiative - VTracU - to enhance the employability of BE
students in the 120-odd engineering colleges affiliated to the university.
In association with MeritTrac, VTU will hold an one-and-a-half hour
assessment test to weigh verbal, analytical and communication skills of
graduates during the second week of May. "BE students from all streams in
fourth, sixth and eighth semesters can take the test to be held at various
centres. The scores will be available to recruiters where they can shortlist
candidates from all colleges without actually having to visit individual
institutes," K Balveera Reddy, V-C, VTU, said.
The university through the Edusat network, will beam a series of live
sessions consisting of pre-placement talks by companies, assessments and
orientation. The facility, to start with, will be open to just BE, ME and
M.Tech students, which will be extended to MBA and MCA students from next
year.
"Every student will get an individual report card on strengths/weaknesses,
highlighting areas of improvement that could enhance employability. Colleges
will also get a comprehensive report on how their students have fared in the
tests that the college should focus on, With this, students will be spared
of writing numerous tests to get a job," Madan Padaki, director, MeriTrac,
said.
A common merit list will be drawn up and posted on the VTU website where
companies using an individual login can choose students of their choice,
specifying their eligibility. Through this single-window system of campus
placement students in rural engineering colleges will have the same chance
of getting a job like that of their urban counterparts.
The industry too stands to benefit. "Through the common assessment test we
will have access to a larger talent pool and help us cut costs and time in
visiting individual colleges to recruit students," Sudheesh Venkatesh, head
of HR at Tesco, said.
Companies: VTU will beam pre-placement talks by Intel, Cognizant,
IBM, Tesco, Accenture, Verizon, HP via Edusat to all engineering colleges
between April 7 and May 26. Sessions on soft skills will be taken up between
June 2 and 9.
